Summary

This study identifies when road users need cooperative perception by combining collision-risk prediction with an assessment of perception blind spots. Roadside camera data are used to locate and track road users, estimate their future motion, and evaluate whether they can perceive one another. The framework was evaluated at two intersections in Madison, Wisconsin, with the aim of reducing communication and computing demands while targeting safety-critical situations.
